NEW Art Fair Details Template - Draft

We are pleased to announce the group exhibition "Conception and Execution" at LURF GALLERY, 2F.
This exhibition is a group exhibition of five artists who are associated with Tokyo University of the Arts (graduate school), but who work from different generations, perspectives, and techniques.
One of the axes is how the difference between the two approaches is reflected in their works.
These differences in approach are not limited to mere differences in production methods, but are deeply related to the artist's thinking and sensitivity, as well as his or her way of expression.
It is our sincere hope that the viewers of this exhibition will be able to feel and discover something from each of the works by freely placing themselves in the midst of such diverse expressions and confronting the works. The exhibition will be held from June 27 (Friday) to July 27 (Sunday), 2025.

Statement

Conception and Execution
In an essay titled "Cézanne's Doubts," published by philosopher Maurice Merleau-Ponty in 1945, just before the end of the war, an interesting sentence appears: "The 'idea' cannot precede the 'execution. As I was looking at the works of the participating artists in this exhibition, who were of different generations and of different interests, this Merleau-Ponty quote came to mind. Why? Perhaps the reason is that the five artists...

The following text was contributed by art historian and art critic Akira Suga for this exhibition.

A painting speaks of more than what is painted. The texture of the material, the friction with the support, the breath of the layers of paint. In the materiality of the painting, there is something that can be called "presence," "space," or "depth without depth," and it leads the viewer inside the painting.
This exhibition introduces two painters, Nobuaki Maeda and Isshin Tanizaki, who have taken different approaches to the roots of painting. Maeda uses water-based acrylics to create layers of color as time deposits by applying multiple thin layers of paint based on horizontal and vertical structures. There is a stillness that resonates with the viewer's breath and a sense of infinite open space.

Talk Session Information

The clear winds of Ihatovo, the blue sky that is cool at the bottom even in summer, the city of Molio decorated with beautiful forests, and the waves of shimmering grass in the suburbs. And the many people I met there, Fazello and Lozaro, Milo the shepherd, the red-faced children, Temo the landowner, Bogant d'Estupago the wildcat doctor...they all seem to me like old-fashioned blue vision lights when I think of them in this dark, huge stone building. They all seem to me like old-fashioned blue phantoms.

AIKA NAGANO

Aika Nagano

The “ma,” or infinite space, as a finite thing. In Japanese painting, “ma,” or the space between the figure and the blank space, is considered important in the composition of the picture plane, but in his own work, he considers the space between the blank spaces as light, and focuses on the ground of the picture plane, or the “finite space. By giving a white ground as light to the infinite space that was originally untouchable, he aimed to include subtleties such as time, humidity, and seasons, and to give the viewer a sense of the artist's flesh. The interval between things and things...
